There are several Akai Rebuilds and upgrades that I'm working on:
In chronological order, the early 3 Motor sets from the late 1960's used lots of power relays, the GX-365D being one such example, it had 13 power relays inside. These were not hermetically sealed and thus suffer from deteriorations from air pollutants and use, which can be arcing or other faults which deteriorate the contact surfaces of the relays moving contacts.
The relays used in the GX-365D ( and also in the Sansui SD-7000 ) are today unavailable from any source. I do have a limited number of replacement 4 Pole Power Relays (with gold plated contacts) of the type used in later Akai's, such as the: GX-260D, GX-265D, GX-266D, GX-267D, GX-266II, GX-400D, GX-650D, and most sets that came after 1972; these relays are $20. each relay, plus shipping charges.
Next in line my Akai Servo-Fix Kit is applicable to most Akai Reel sets made after 1974 ( but not the GX-400D, GX-400D-ss Series sets, or the PRO-1000 ) see more on that - on my Servo-Fix Page.
Now I'm slowly working on: The SYSCON Rebuild Kits - which are much more extensive "Fixes" and must be "machine specific" due to different parts and variations which are based upon the repeated parts failures noted by Akai Service, as were documented in the Akai Service Bulletins of the late 1970's and early 1980's.
Some limited numbers of Akai Replacement Parts: Reel tables, Reel table pins, Heads, capstan and reel motors, output level controls, PC Boards, solonoids, Brake bands, hardware, microswitches, pinch rollers, etc., are available as working pulls from several machines I use as parts donors; email if you need specific parts.
Most Akai Reel to Reel Service Manuals are also available, and some Owners / OP Manuals as detailed on the Akai Manuals page..
